Fenugreek has been used since ancient times as a versatile remedy for various problems. The Romans added it to wine and used it to alleviate labor pains. In modern times, fenugreek is not forgotten as most ancient remedies but has gained additional traction. Various studies have only bolstered its use. Let's look at some interesting discoveries related to fenugreek.
Increase testosterone levels. Fenugreek was put to a test for its potential to naturally increase testosterone levels. It contains compounds called furostanolic saponins, which are supposed to increase testosterone production. Several studies have shown that taking dietary supplements with fenugreek can increase testosterone levels and alleviate symptoms related to low testosterone levels, such as low libido. For example, an 8-week study with 49 athletic men has demonstrated that taking dietary supplements with 500 mg of fenugreek per day increases testosterone levels, improves strength, and reduces body fat compared to the group that was taking a placebo. Protodioscin is a type of saponin that is especially efficient in increasing testosterone levels. A 12-week study in 50 men has demonstrated that an impressive 90% of those who were taking a daily 500 mg supplement that contained concentrated levels of protodioscin increased their testosterone levels by up to 46%. Furthermore, most of the group that was taking fenugreek and not the placebo experienced an improvement in their mood, energy level, libido, and sperm count.
Fenugreek turned out to be a good tool to reduce blood glucose and manage cholesterol in people with diabetes.
Lactating women. Four different studies have demonstrated that fenugreek improves the production of milk in the mammary glands of lactating women. Mothers who were taking fenugreek seeds experienced a 49% increase in their milk production in the second week and a 103% increase in the fourth week.
Appetite suppressant. It is known that fenugreek influences the absorption of carbohydrates and fats, reduces insulin levels, and consequently affects appetite. This allows you to eat less and give up certain foods you are better off without. A water-soluble heteropolysaccharide present in fenugreek helps you to lose weight and reduce the accumulation of fat.
