Gels are generally different than isotonic drinks – most of them don’t contain electrolytes, and the composition of carbohydrates is different.

To answer this problem, Nduranz developed a high-energy gel, called Nrgy, which in one serving provides an identical amount of energy as the isotonic drink Ndure – half of the energy required for one hour of a long high-intensity workout or one-hour energy supply for a medium-intensity workout. Nduranz set this as one energy unit (one Nrgy unit ), which makes it easier than ever to mix and match your isotonic drinks and energy gels.

Nrgy Prototype provides 40g* of carbohydrates in the 1:0.8 ratio between maltodextrin and fructose to match our natural absorption capabilities. It also includes electrolytes in the ratio found in the blood. Next to salt, it includes potassium, magnesium, and calcium in a readily available citrate unit – one gel replaces minerals in 400ml of lost sweat. It does not contain harmful artificial aromas, the gelling agent is gellan gum – tetrasaccharide from the microorganism Sphingomonas elodea.

WHY DO WE CLAIM NDURANZ’S GELS ARE THE BEST ENERGY GELS FOR TRIATHLETES?

Nduranz produced something that didn’t exist: an isotonic drink concentrated into a single gel.

It is not easy to follow the rule of 90g of ingested carbohydrates – especially with gels, a synonym for digestive issues. This is why athletes usually choose a “diluted” energy gel – 20g of CHO in 80g of solution. This means the digestive tract is not burdened, but your mind and body suffer due to a lack of energy. Nrgy gel Prototype contains double the amount of energy (currently 40g, the final version will include 45g, which is exactly half of what is needed for the longest-duration training sessions).

Nduranz was the first to create a simple system to reach an energy intake between 90g and 120g of CHO without digestive issues. The gels and the Ndure energy-hydration drink are created in a unique 1:0.8 ratio of maltodextrin and fructose for optimal intake of carbohydrates. This ratio is based on the human organism’s absorption of our most important energy macronutrient, carbohydrates. Carbohydrates and the oxygen we breathe create the energy necessary for the functioning of our muscles and organs.

Maltodextrin, a less sweet complex carbohydrate made of bonded glucose molecules with the same GI as glucose, attaches to glucose transporters after breaking down into smaller subunits. Fructose is not usually used in common sports drinks, but the body can gain almost the same amount of energy from glucose and fructose (1:0.8). Fructose attaches to its own fructose transporter, GLUT5.

The 1:0.8 ratio of maltodextrin and fructose allows two to three gels per hour to be fully absorbed and not cause a blockage in the small intestine. This is what diarrhoea during a race really comes down to – water floods into the bowel from the intestinal wall because there is something in the digestive tract that should have been digested a long time ago.

The energy gel Nrgy and the isotonic drink Ndure are basically identical in their composition of energy sources, so you can decide for yourself how you mix and match them. Just like one serving of the Ndure energy-hydration drink, the energy gel provides an identical amount of energy which is totally utilised – 45*g of two-component CHO with electrolytes identical in ratio to human sweat (*currently due to adjustment of natural aromas the gel contains 40g, while the final version will contain 45g). Different activities and environments (temperature, intensity) require different amounts of energy, and sometimes we base our decision on flavour, environment, or feeling. Before a steep hill, we need more concentrated energy (and not a stomach full of fluid), so we will appreciate the energy gel Nrgy.

WHY 90g PER HOUR IS THE GOLDEN STANDARD IN TRIATHLON AND CYCLING?

90g of ingested and oxidised, i.e. transformed into energy, carbohydrates improve a triathlete’s capabilities in three major areas:

a) provide energy to the working muscles, necessary for muscle work through several hours;

b) decrease tiredness and preserve concentration, reducing stress hormones and preserving glucose, absolutely necessary for the operation of mental processes and parasympathetic nervous system;

c) prevents muscle cramps, preserving normal electrochemical communication between neurotransmitters and muscle receptors.

The human body does not function like a car engine and a gas tank – a car can drive with the same tempo until there’s a drop of gas left in the tank. When we use half of our glycogen (against contrary belief, we can achieve that in 60 to 90 minutes), the energy sensors that control our body’s glycogen store limit physical abilities because they do not want us to exhaust ourselves too quickly. An analysis of results revealed that the amount of successfully ingested CHO is directly connected with time and muscle damage (creatine kinase). Dr. Asker Jeukendrup analysed the intake of carbohydrates in relation to the final placement of triathletes at Ironman Hawaii and discovered that there is a strong correlation between the absolute amount of ingested carbohydrates per minute and the final placement of the triathletes.
